IN THE NEWS TODAY

1. Parts of Shakespeare’s most famous romance were deemed too lascivious for a Tennessee school crowd yesterday, after teachers and parents alike tried to get certain parts of a Canadian troupe’s performace cut.

Mercutio’s ribald line “The bawdy hand of the dial is now upon the prick of noon” was one of them, as well as some other bits about maidenheads and women’s carriages in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The concerns came from “adults” after watching the dress rehearsal for the show planning to play in front of high school kids.

Director Sherri Leathers stood behind the play, saying that the performance at the dress rehearsal “was Awesome (capitalization ours -Eds.)”.

Val, a local homeschool “teacher” told the Toronto Star she “struggled being here with [her] son. The sexuality was too much. Our children need to be more pure.” Read the rest of this entry »

1. Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff was sassy on a dark Parliament Hill today, as he began his two-day winter caucus retreat.

Things got off to a cracking start when, just as Ignatieff was about to begin his opening remarks, the lights went out.

Ever the comedian, Ignatieff had a line ready for that one.

“The Prime Minister doesn’t do anything by halves,” he told reporters, “he not only shuts down Parliament, he shuts off the lights.”

Once he got around to them, his opening remarks were snarky — referring to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s newly-shuffled cabinet as a bunch of puppets.

“It’s always the same team,” Ignatieff said. “The puppets are always there, and they just change the little puppets, but the great leader is still there.” Read the rest of this entry »

IN THE NEWS TODAY

1. A Toronto woman has been charged by police with impersonating a witch, to steal money from a lawyer who should really have known better.  She’s the 29th person in the last 10 years to be charged with being a fake witch, and as far as I know, that’s infinitely more than have been charged with being a real witch. Apparently, being a real witch is a-okay.  Halloween stores are already cancelling orders of pointy hats and brooms.
