1. Parts of Shakespeare’s most famous romance were deemed too lascivious for a Tennessee school crowd yesterday, after teachers and parents alike tried to get certain parts of a Canadian troupe’s performace cut.
Mercutio’s ribald line “The bawdy hand of the dial is now upon the prick of noon” was one of them, as well as some other bits about maidenheads and women’s carriages in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
The concerns came from “adults” after watching the dress rehearsal for the show planning to play in front of high school kids.
Director Sherri Leathers stood behind the play, saying that the performance at the dress rehearsal “was Awesome (capitalization ours -Eds.)”.
Val, a local homeschool “teacher” told the Toronto Star she “struggled being here with [her] son. The sexuality was too much. Our children need to be more pure.” Read the rest of this entry »
